The "Capability-Building for DRR Practitioners on the Conduct of Research for Effective DRRM" seminar, held from October 14 to 16 at the M Grand Royale Hotel in Catbalogan, Samar, brought together educators and practitioners dedicated to advancing disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) in schools. The event kicked off with ceremonial formalities, followed by an opening address from Maria Socorro Pancipanci, Legal Officer of the City Division, standing in for School Division Supervisor Dr. Sherlita A. Palma.


Day 1 unfolded with a series of illuminating sessions. Regional Research Coordinator Jennylind D. Daya introduced the Basic Education Research Agenda and the Basic Education Research Fund, setting the stage for a deeper understanding of research's role in education. Division DRRM Focal Person Sir Crisvill M. Villamor emphasized the importance of a systematic approach to DRRM, highlighting strategies to safeguard educational institutions.

Senior Education Program Specialist Sir Jade B. Calleja then detailed practical methodologies for conducting DRRM research, providing tools for real-world applications. Arlene V. Gillo followed with an overview of DepEd’s research templates, simplifying the research process for attendees, while Dr. Emmanuel P. Firmo Jr. closed the day with insights on problem sensing, a vital skill for identifying research gaps.


Day 2 focused on the nuts and bolts of research development. Dr. Galicano Jay N. Fabi opened with an exploration of research topic formulation, guiding participants through the initial stages of research design. Danilo M. Macapugas Jr. then broke down the art of crafting problem statements, followed by Romeo A. Bulilis, who outlined comprehensive research methodologies. The day ended with an interactive session led by Ryan Joseph M. Salaño, as enthusiastic participants proposed their research topics.

On the final day, Noah Justine C. Sayson provided a hands-on session on APA 7th edition citation writing, underscoring the importance of academic integrity. Lemuel Leonil C. Poculan addressed ethical considerations in research, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with conducting studies. The seminar concluded with a reflective discussion led by Sir Jade B. Calleja, Sir Crisvill M. Villamor, and Ms. Jennylind D. Daya, who outlined future directions for DRRM research in the region.

The event closed on a high note with a group photo and the awarding of certificates. As participants returned to Tacloban City, they carried with them new insights and skills, well-prepared to contribute to effective DRRM initiatives in their respective schools.
